The thing that keeps Bud going is his love for his mother, whom he refers to as Momma. In the process, he learns to trust in the casual kindness of the strangers he meets on his way (like Lefty Lewis) and be open to being part of a community, like the one he finds in Hooverville with Deza Malone. It is what inspires him to leave the foster care system and run away from Flint to Grand Rapids. More than anything else, Bud wants a home and a family. Despite losing his mother four years ago when he was just six years old, Bud remains optimistic that a new and better “door” is just around the corner for him to open. ![]() He is a resourceful, intelligent, and optimistic African American boy who has spent the last several years in an orphanage (which he calls the Home) and being shifted from foster home to foster home in Flint, Michigan. Bud Caldwell, who is christened “Sleepy LaBone” towards the end of the story, is the protagonist of Bud, Not Buddy. ![]()
